Last weekend, I flew to Los Angeles to attend the weekend-long makeup nirvana that is IMATS. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the International Makeup Artist Trade Show, and founder, Michael Key, made sure this milestone was nothing short of amazing. Industry pros conducted seminars and participated in Q&A discussion panels. A number of brands attracted artists and beauty junkies to their stocked booths. And I was there to document it all! (Well, what I could, anyway lol) Annnd of course, squeeze in some shopping ;)
But as much as I love stocking up on products, my favorite thing about IMATS is undoubtedly the education. One word: invaluable.
My favorite seminars were led by celebrity makeup artists and educators, Sam Fine and Sian Richards. As the artist behind the beautiful complexions of Iman, Queen Latifah, Beyonce, and many others, Sam expertly taught attendees tips on applying makeup to deeper skin tones. While Sian’s vast expertise in the realm of makeup for TV & film made for thoroughly enjoyable lecture on how to do simple, minimalistic makeup for the big screen. Not to mention, her blunt, no-nonsense approach to makeup paired with her sense of humor made it equally as entertaining. I just adore the work of these two, and hung on their every word.
I also attended a discussion that provided a wealth of knowledge about joining the Union, which was hosted by its president, Sue Cabral-Ebert.
Other notable speakers included Stuart Bray, Ashley Rudder, and Lottie.
My other favorite things to do were check out the film makeup exhibit and body painting demos. . .
I could go on for days about the informative wonders of this trade show, but I’ll wrap it up by saying a fabulous time was had this past weekend. Already looking forward to the next one!
