To be familiar with the Kardashian-Jenner clan is to know that basically everything they do is an extravaganza. So when matriarch Kris Jenner announced her brief hijacking of Kylie Cosmetics on Instagram, it was done in the most dramatic, fabulous way possible.
Kris’ collab with daughter, beauty mogul Kylie Jenner was in celebration of Mother’s Day and the two released a full limited-edition collection of lipsticks, a blush and highlighter palette, and of course, an eyeshadow palette. Each piece was also sold in a complete set for a whopping $150.
I have to admit that I caved and purchased this palette on a complete whim. I don’t own many cool toned palettes, and thought that it would be a good way to try out Kylie Cosmetics for the first time.
So. . .read on for my thoughts!
Right off the bat, I found the packaging to be really cute; however, I was surprised at how small the palette itself is. For the retail price of $42, I expected a unit that was slightly bigger. BUT, not to worry – you still are getting quite a decent amount of product per pan (I compared it with other palettes I own that have the same price point), and the compact packaging makes it convenient to travel with.
Another tiny complaint I had was that there wasn’t a protective sheet over the shadows, so they were slightly smeared when I opened the palette. Nothing was damaged, but again, it was a bit of a drawback considering the price point. And although Kris’ quote is a cute touch, I also would have preferred a mirror on the lid.
The Kris Kollection eyeshadow palette comes with 12 cool-toned shades, featuring a variety of matte, metallic, and glitter textures.
FYI: If you’re in my skin tone range (medium-deep with olive undertones) or deeper, creating a complete eye look with this palette will be difficult to do, as the matte transitional shades are too ashy to use in the crease. (I suspected this would be the case, but I was more interested in playing with the shimmery shadows anyhow.)
Unfortunately, I was very unimpressed with the overall performance of these shadows, the shimmer shades particularly. While they look pretty in the pan and as swatches, they were extremely lackluster on the eyes, even when dampened. I will say that they were slightly more potent when applied with my ring finger, however, they really lack longevity. Even with a good primer (I use a MAC paintpot), the shine faded by the end of the day.
Needless to say, this was super disheartening because these really are beautiful shadows. But for the price, the performance wasn’t what it should have been, especially when compared with others in a similar price range. There are a few shades out of the twelve that can be worked with, but overall I definitely don’t think this palette is a must-have.
