Anyone who keeps up with the latest happenings in the makeup world will have you know that product launches and collaborations in the realm of beauty are not taken lightly. So, when Morphe Cosmetics and beauty influencer, Jaclyn Hill launched Jaclyn’s self-titled creation in late June, the response was overwhelming – so overwhelming, in fact, that the palette reportedly sold out within 45 of its launch on the Morphe website.
Because of Hill’s huge following in the social media beauty circuit, her 2-years-in-the-making collab with Morphe had quite a bit of buzz – and some drama – surrounding it. However, this isn’t the first time JH has gotten people talking. Last summer, she faced some heat regarding her collaboration with Becca Cosmetics. Admittedly, I’ve shared in some of the skepticism many have when it comes to Jaclyn as of late, but I generally try to not place a huge amount of emphasis on name/brand popularity – or industry politics for that matter – when something new catches my eye.
If you’re curious about what I thought of the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette, keep reading!
Alright, two words: Color. Selection…!
The colors in this palette (more specifically, the four shades in the bottom row) are honestly the sole reason I purchased it! If I ever stopped buying eyeshadows (VERY strong “if” here, btw), I’d definitely be set with these alone. The amount of shades you get is one thing (35, to be exact) but their range is another. Practically any look can be achieved with this palette – natural, glam, dramatic, bold – it’s all right here.
There are a fair amount of neutrals and warm tones which I love – these kinds of hues are my go-to’s (fans of cooler tones may not be so in love with that, but there are a few cool shades featured in the palette). I appreciate the overall earthiness and toned-down nature of the color scheme; majority of the shades are very wearable. Although I adore the brighter shades in the bottom corner, one of my favorite things about this palette is that the louder colors don’t dominate it.
FYI: The shadows were in perfect condition when they arrived. The smudges in a few of the colors are from swatching. . .couldn’t resist playing with them before taking product shots!
The quality and texture of these shadows saw VERY mixed opinions. Some reviews claimed they were perfection – nicely pigmented, smooth, and velvety. Meanwhile others complained about fallout and lack of pigment. Personally, I was and am extremely impressed with the quality of these shadows. Not quite sure what all the negative fuss was about, but to each their own!
Yes, they are stunningly pigmented – I actually prefer to apply lid colors with my finger because of how soft they are and how smoothly they apply and blend. Because of how pigmented they are, there is some degree of fallout, especially with the darker shades. However, fallout has never been a drawback for me when testing shadows, since I always do my eye makeup first.
These also layer quite nicely (I wore “Firework” on my entire lid with “Queen” in the center for a sunset-esque look) and can easily be used with MAC’s Fix+ or any setting spray to amp up the shine factor on the shimmer shades.
The retail price of this palette is $38, a significant increase from the usual $22 price point. Naturally, this caused a stir among Morphe customers, especially international beauty lovers who already aren’t happy about overseas shipping expenses.
While I completely understand the frustration about the price, I personally feel that the quality and amount of product easily justifies the cost.
I’m happy to say that the Jaclyn Hill Palette is 100% Glamlust approved! There’s no doubt that I will be reaching for this almost exclusively for a while. The colors and quality of the shadows are fabulous and reasonably priced. Give it a try!
Until next time. . .stay glamorous! xo
